APRIL

Authors, Publishers and Readers of Independent Literature (APRIL) was an annual festival celebrating small press publishing. I started APRIL with a few friends in a tiny bookstore, and together we grew it into one of the highlights of the Seattle arts calendar. As the festival’s creative director, I handled our visual identity, internal and external language, oversaw the creation of marketing materials. I also helped design programming, and emceed most of these events.

Some of our best-selling swag: the Buy Books in Person tote, which celebrated shopping at independent bookstores.

Over five years, we held over 75 events. Here, poet Maged Zaher reads at Seattle’s Chop Suey. Emceeing these events taught me most of what I know about public speaking.

Each year, we’d tweak the visual language of the festival. I worked with a different designer each year to create a striking but still recognizable brand.
